CRIME DOESN’T PAY - BUT CRIME STOPPERS DOES!

AboutWHAT IS CRIME STOPPERS?

Crime Stoppers is not a law enforcement organization. It is a civilian, non-profit corporation established within a community to set up a Hotline to receive anonymous tips about criminal activity or wanted felons. Tips received by Crime Stoppers are passed along to the law enforcement agency with the jurisdiction and responsibility for investigating the crime being reported. Crime Stoppers simple objective is to solve and prevent local crime.

AboutHOW DOES CRIME STOPPERS WORK?

When a Crime Stoppers call is received, the call taker obtains as much detailed information from the informant as possible. After obtaining information from the informant, the call taker will assign the informant a code number and instruct the caller to maintain the code number in all future contacts with Crime Stoppers. Since Crime Stoppers does not want to know the identity of the informant, the informant is instructed that it is their responsibility to call Crime Stoppers with any additional information that may come up in the case and to call Crime Stoppers back within 2 to 3 weeks to check the status on their case.

The Coordinator then prepares a Crime Stoppers tip report. The tip and disposition reports are then referred to an Investigator(s) for follow-up investigation. The investigating officer assigned to the case shall attempt to clear the case in question using the information in the tip report. If the Investigator(s) feels that additional information is needed, the Investigator(s) notifies the Crime Stoppers Coordinator to obtain additional information when the informant calls to check on the status of his/her case. The informant’s anonymity is always safeguarded and no information, which would tend to show or lead to the caller’s identity, will be contained in the tip report.

The Investigator(s) are asked to send the disposition report with details of the investigation and/or arrests and cases cleared back to Crime Stoppers within 7 to 10 days or as soon as an informant’s information is developed to a point where arrest and criminal charges are imminent. When the informant calls Crime Stoppers to check the statue of their cases, the disposition report is consulted and the informant is told what has happened in their case. If the informant’s tip resulted in arrest(s) and/or cases cleared the informant is instructed on how they will receive their rewards.
